Navin Ramgoolam , sois beau et t’ais toi

In The Prince , Machiavelli said a man should be injured so that you need not fear his revenge,so is Navin Ramgoolam. The PM of Mauritius is a totalitarian who is on course to annihilate L’express Newspaper by beheading them financially. It is a graceful act and it should be condemned. But is the Prime Minister nervous about the political ground underneath him?…Again, Machiavelli reveals that one should foresee the difficulties and prevent it from becoming an incurable disease ,otherwise it will be too late to remedy. In the words of Michael Howard (ex conservative leader) , are you thinking what I am thinking. This is the “style” of governance by the Prime Minister.

Any strong and confident leader should respond to any criticisms or news manipulation with tact. Mauritius is a “democratic” country where the only acceptable views should comply to the government’s whims and where “free speech” should be heavily state controlled. Freedom of speech is a basic right which one should enjoy in society.Disagreement of opinions should not provoke oppression by the governmental regime but unfortunately it is happening. News manipulation is not new in the media. For instance, the billionaire media owner Rupert Murdoch has a slimy history of influencing elections from the United States through the United Kingdom to Australia. However, during the Presidential elections in the United States his attempt to prevent Obama from becoming President went on deaf ears or even in the United Kingdom the political campaign lead by Sky News along with News International to back the conservatives was not successful. The days where newspapers were maneuvering the thinking process of many is gradually faltering.

I am not in awe of lexpress or any long standing newspapers in Mauritius except may be Mauritius Times.Such newspapers have taken the Mauritian population intellectually as hostages for decades. They fueled a dictatorial and tabloid structure in our society over many years. They are still doing so.However, they have the right to express their views,so can Navin and others. The leader of a country should promote a culture of debate instead of giving us two choices : conformism or totalitarianism.

  1. “Any strong and confident leader should respond to any criticisms or news manipulation with tact.”

Navine is neither strong, nor confident.
